My new home slice
Yeah, about that fun I mentioned. That’s for me. Oh, don’t worry, some fun is coming your way too. But that’s later. See, I recently got myself a ’slice’, courtesy of SliceHost, which is a catchy name for what’s known as a virtual private server. Basically, it’s like a sandbox - in which I can do whatever I want, without any of the limits of cheapo shared hosting.
So I’m going to be putting some of my newly-buffed skills to work on developing a Rails-based site that will totally kick the pants off what I did six years ago in PHP. Anyone remember that? Logging in to see pictures, blog posts, and personal info? It was a grand dream, but alas, a poor implementation.
If you’ve never programmed something useful… imagine creating a little robot, that would follow you around and be your servant. But it’s really you too, as you made it all yourself! Eh… push that analogy around in a few directions and you’ll get close. So I’m excited to have fun making exactly what I want out my personal website. Maybe even some things that help Becky’s teacher-parent communication. And by taking control of privacy issues, we’ll be able to put more of ourselves online, improving the long-distance relationships that are the whole purpose here.
