That was strange.

One of the main things that bugged me leaving my job in Chicago was wasted sick leave.  It got to the point that I wouldn’t have had to work Fridays for the last month I was there if I didn’t want to.  Should I use all my days or actually teach my kids?  It was a quandary.

Yesterday I got an envelope from my old school district.  Inside was the direct deposit notice for my sick leave balance.  Yes, I got paid for the days I didn’t take.  Um, what?  No one at my school knew I would get one of those and just about everyone encouraged me to take as many days as I could.  Good thing I only took 2 or 3!

The other good thing is that now I’ve technically been paid in another state this year.  Yay for filing federal and state taxes again this year! :)

  1. i’ve been thinking about you guys – it’s felt like a long month to me, so it seems like forever since i’ve heard from you. :) yay for updates!

  2. That’s awesome! It does make sense they should compensate you for them… I guess… What does being paid in another state do for you?

  3. yep, they legally have to pay you for unused pto. (although, technically they should have paid you with your last paycheck…)

I also learned recently that “highly-compensated” executives don’t have “sick/vacation time” because the company has to keep cash on hand for all outstanding sick/vacation time. so it would be ridiculous if they did. there’s your finance lesson for the day!

also, glad you’re back on the blog!

  4. hot diggity. . . wish my company would do that. I’m all capped out on sick leave at the moment.
