One of my Greatest Strengths

Posted at 4:50 pm by Becky

One of my greatest strengths is my ability to constructively procrastinate.

What I don’t want to do right now and need to do: write a welcome-to-my-class letter and supply list in both English and Spanish. This is not a hard task. I have the supply list already in English, so all I need to do is tweak it, then translate it. And it’s not that hard to write “I’m so excited to meet you and get ready for a great school year” ad nauseam. See, I just did it. I even know how to write most of that in Spanish, and I have plenty of Spanish dictionaries to help me with what I don’t know. Still don’t want to do it, though.

So, in the mean time, I have accomplished many things: knit two hats and started a scarf (which helps with my “use up the yarn stash so I can start making Christmas stockings” goal), baked chocolate crinkle cookies (for a meeting at school tomorrow), baked rhubarb bars (for small group tonight–in related news, we are now out of rhubarb. Anyone who wants to help with that conundrum is more than free to do so), read about teaching reading (which I’m pretty good at, but got some good pointers), read about dual-language instruction (in a not-that-helpful book on the topic, but whatever), walked to the library to return books, unloaded the dishwasher and cleaned the kitchen, and written this post. I’m contemplating folding laundry. Sheesh.

See? Everything I’ve done has been productive, so it’s hard to convince myself not to do those things. It’s just not what I should be doing. Maybe now I’ll get around to what I should do. Right.

EDIT: I actually buckled down and did it! Now I get to take it to school tomorrow to show my colleagues how bad my Spanish is have someone look over.

I’m also really good at procrastination, both productive and non-productive. We should start a club or write a book or something. But only, apparently, when we both have other important things to do.

    1) I’d join your procrastination club. I’d be happy to do so, especially if I had something important to do. Actually I’ll join now! (See 2)

    2) Becky, if you want to share your oh-so-wonderful-bilingual-letter, I’d love to see/use it! (Then I won’t have to do one myself…) I actually have a number of documents I could share as well, if you’re interested.

    3) You can have rhubarb any time you want to come visit!! Well, any time within it’s growing season. We picked two GALLON bags the other day! I made rhubarb cookies, which are strange but good.
