(Note for the English majors out there… how in the world do you end that sentence without a preposition? After all, ending a sentence with a preposition is something up with which I shall not put!)
Today was my last day of vacation. Sigh. It kind of frittered away, actually. I ran some errands (for all the teachers out there, a candle warmer and a few jar candles from the dollar store will do wonders for your classroom environment!), and read Bridget Jones’ Diary at Starbucks. I was pleased to see that the pumpkin spice lattes are back. It went wonderfully with today’s drizzle. It was almost an Edmonds kind of day. Almost.
Then I came up and tidied up the flat a bit (it sounds more sophisticated to call it a flat. Perhaps I shall make it more a part of my vernacular), then made calzones for dinner. I definitely recommend taking off all jewelry before attempting to deal with the dough. After turning the sticky, floury mess into, well, a less sticky, floury mess, dinner was served. Mighty tasty, too.
Then Jamie and I made a major tactical error: we went to the pet store. We’ve talked about getting a cat for a long time, and I am very excited at the possibility of having a furry pet at home (a fish just didn’t cut it). At the store we saw a little kitten (well, probably 1-2 year old) that looked just like Moka! (Moka is my parents’ cat who has a ton of personality and is lots of fun.) I wanted to take her home. Tonight. Then I looked on her cage and it said that she had to go with her other little kitty friend. TWO adorable cats! Glinda and Alfie… I want to bring them home. Our apartment has a one cat limit, however. I’m wondering if they would find out… Does Jamie also get a one cat limit?
Back to work tomorrow…and that’s about all I have to say about that (except that my room is almost all set up already including labeled bins in the library, matching stickers on the books, every paper filled in its appropriate file, computers hooked up [almost entirely], dorky teacher posters on the walls, apple fabric covering nasty chalkboards… if cuteness equals preparation, I’m good to go!
Seriously… what is wrong with me?).

…so I have been getting ready for school! On Monday and Tuesday I had workshops for one of the grants I got last year. I’m such a nerd. I get so excited about new teaching ideas (even if it’s as simple as “keep the kids’ reading journals in magazine boxes labelled for each day”), so I’ve actually been excited to set up my classroom.
I was at school on Wednesday and Friday, getting ready. It feels good to have my room way more organized than it ever was last year (seriously, I didn’t ever organize my desk drawer last year. I was never sure what would pop out at my when I opened it). My books are in labelled bins, my files are organized into one cabinet, games and calculators are in labelled plastic crates… it’s a joy to my type-A self! (Man, imagine what I could do if I had a label maker!) Now, I just have to finish putting up posters, arrange the desks, and OH YEAH, decide what we’re doing for the first few days, reorganize my math and reading programs, and make copies of all the beginning of the year stuff (after re-writing it of course). I was thinking that having a year under my belt was a good thing, but now it seems a lot like it just shows me all the things I need to do better. Eh, that’s what I get for being, well, me.
In other news, I have rediscovered the joy of the library! I’ve gone twice since getting my library card about two weeks ago, and given myself permission to read “brain candy” books. So delightful! I’m currently reading Can you Keep a Secret by Sophie Kinsella… very Bridget Jones-esque. Fun.
On to today’s to-do list:
- Make permanent tags for the library baskets
- make stickers to put on books to show where they belong
- Order two more posters for the classroom
- Find the brain book I use for the first few days
- Perhaps re-write my “Sixth Grade Success Guide”
- Make labels for the kids’ coat hooks
Here I go!

Yesterday Jamie and I received a new addition to the family: a Kitchenaid stand mixer in cornflower blue (kasmicb, for short)!! After picking it up and cuddling with it for a while, I decided to put it to good use.
Here is what I made:
| Banana-Oatmeal Power Cookies These cookies have it all—nuts, grains and fruit. Their portable size makes them perfect for taking on hikes, bike rides and all sorts of expeditions. |
